Changes to Health Visiting Service-led breastfeeding support groups

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s Health Visiting Service has made some changes to its breastfeeding support groups to provide more targeted and equitable support.

As a Health Board, we are proud to support the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative and these changes will support more women experiencing complex breastfeeding issues to receive support from the Infant Specialist Feeding Team on a 1:1 basis at home or at the Infant Specialist Breastfeeding Clinic.

To build on the model successfully implemented in other groups, the Dinas Powys Breastfeeding Support Group will be supported by a mix of trained healthcare professionals from across Health Visiting Service from 2nd September 2024. This includes community staff nurses and community nursery nurses who are skilled in identifying feeding concerns.

Due to low attendance, the Health Visiting Service has discontinued support at the Cardiff Bay Breastfeeding Support Group on the corner of Corporation Road/Avondale Road. Women requiring additional support can attend other Health Visiting Service-led support groups or peer support groups. Additionally, women can contact their health visitor for advice and support. Women requiring specialist support will be referred into the Infant Specialist Feeding Team which runs a weekly clinic and offers home visits.
