Western Vale Local Vaccination Centre to Open in April

A Local Vaccination Centre is set to open in the Western Vale of Glamorgan in April to support the delivery of the Covid -19 vaccination programme delivered by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

The three GP Practices in the area are working in partnership to offer residents the vaccine at the CF61 centre in Llantwit Major, formerly the Youth Centre, to increase the vaccination delivery and accessibility.

The Western Vale Local Vaccination Centre will focus on the 18-49 cohort and will invite people in 10 year age groups, starting with the 40-49 cohort from 12 April.

The centre will be on course to deliver up to 750 vaccinations per week. Residents will receive an invitation by letter from their GP Practice with their appointment time and date. There is no need to contact your GP Practice, they will be in touch as they move through the age groups.

The number of clinics each week will depend on the vaccination supply to Cardiff and Vale UHB, but the targets for the cohorts can be found below:

  • Age 40-49 will be invited from week commencing 12 April and completed week commencing 26 April

  • Age 30-39 will be invited from week commencing 3 May and completed week commencing 17 May

  • Age 18-29 will be invited from week commencing 24 May and completed week commencing 21 June.

  • Second doses for this cohort will start from 21 June.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccine will I receive at the Western Vale LVC?

The Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine will be delivered at Western Vale LVC and will be delivered in two doses at least 11 weeks apart. Your GP Practice will arrange both appointments.

I am over 50, can I attend the LVC?

Western Vale LVC will be administering first doses only until the 21 June in line with the vaccination priority groups.

The vaccination programme for over 50's is already underway and most have received their first dose. If you are scheduled for your second dose you will most likely receive this in the same location as your first dose. GP's in the area vaccinated the 80 and over group, age 75-79 and age 65-69 so you should already have an appointment or you will be invited back to your practice, if you fall within these groups.

I don’t want the vaccine. What should I do?

The vaccine is not compulsory but it is one of the best ways to protect yourselves, your loved ones and the local community. If you don’t want to receive it the GP Practices will advise you in the invitation letter how you can decline.

If you do decide not to have the vaccine and then change your mind, please let the Practices know ASAP.

What if I can’t attend on the date I have been given?

Appointment availability is limited and patients should make every effort to attend their given appointments. If you absolutely cannot attend there will be information in the invitation letter of how to re-arrange.

Why are younger age groups being vaccinated before me?

The Covid -19 vaccination programme is one of the largest the NHS has delivered. The aim is to protect the population as quickly as possible so priority groups are being vaccinated concurrently to enable us to reach more people.
