Woodwork Assistant Volunteer for Adults with Learning Disabilities

Why we want you
Our Woodwork volunteers provide support to staff to deliver woodwork sessions and support our trainees with learning disabilities develop their woodwork skills in a nurturing environment. Our volunteers provide crucial social interaction for our trainees to be able to gain confidence in the project with learning the basics of carpentry, joinery and furniture assembly.

Activities you can help with:

  • Help with the production of a wide range of handmade and assembled wooden products for the home and garden

  • Preparing and treating wood

  • Drilling fixing assembling

  • Ensure safety of the trainees around equipment and tools

  • Devise or find relevant work/activities for students to participate in

  • Observing and supervising

  • Encourage trainee’s personal confidence and skills development

  • Assist trainees with break times (making of tea/coffee)

  • Other general duties from time to time

Skills

  • Good listener

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of gardening

  • A patient and friendly manner

  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in a variety of different tasks

  • Willingness to understand trainees needs and abilities

We’re looking for volunteers who have past experience/interest in carpentry, joinery and workshops who are eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with others.  Your support and encouragement will empower our trainees to develop their woodworking skills.

What a day looks like
As a Woodwork Assistant at V21 Woodwork Barry you will be crucial in providing support to staff and trainees to assist with the making of products.  Your role will involve supporting our trainees with day to day activities that include using hand power tools, assembling furniture, cutting wood and identifying woodworking tools and equipment. 

Our trainees enjoy a range of different activities while attending the woodwork project.  The levels of support trainees require varies from trainee to trainee.  Often trainees enjoy having the option of 1:1 support while they are working so that they feel confident in what they are doing.  Which is where volunteers are essential in providing this level of support. Our trainees value having someone to show the work they are producing to and appreciate having someone showing an interest in what they are interested in.  These are some of the activities you will be able to help our trainees with; or sometimes it will be making sure you are on hand to make sure trainees are able to properly prepare a cup of tea or coffee on their break.

Time commitment:  Hours and days are flexible and negotiable with the organisation.
Expenses reimbursed: Travel expenses are reimbursed.

Full training is provided.
