World Breastfeeding Week 2023

This week (1 – 7 August) we’re joining organisations around the world to support World Breastfeeding Week!

Breastfeeding is a personal choice and, in the UK around 80% of babies are breastfed at birth. Many mothers choose to breastfeed because:

  • Your breast milk is perfectly designed for your baby

  • Breast milk protects your baby from infections and diseases

  • Breastfeeding provides health benefits for you

  • Breast milk is available for your baby whenever your baby needs it

  • Breastfeeding can build a strong emotional bond between you and your baby

At Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board, we run a number of community breastfeeding support groups across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. All groups are run by experienced health visitors or midwives, apart from peer support groups which are run by parents who have been trained to provide breastfeeding support.

They’re the perfect opportunity to access help and support and meet other breastfeeding mums!

We also offer two specialist breastfeeding groups a week which can be accessed via a referral from your midwife or a Seren Support Worker.

For more information about our community groups, please visit  Specialist breastfeeding support in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan from the Seren Team - Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (nhs.wales)

Further useful information and guidance can be found on The Breastfeeding Network | Independent Breastfeeding Support and NHS 111 Wales - Pregnancy Guide.

Stay tuned for more World Breastfeeding Week content!
