Gold Accolade Awarded to Inclusive Dance Class at Esteemed Ceremony
Motion Control Dance, situated in Barry, has recently achieved the prestigious Gold award from Disability Sport Wales insport Club Accreditation the Vale of Glamorgan Council can confirm.
This recognition highlights their dedicated efforts to provide a fully inclusive program catering to disabled individuals of all ages, whether as participants, volunteers, or board members.
Being one of just two clubs in the Vale of Glamorgan to attain this top-tier award underscores Motion Control's steadfast commitment to inclusivity for all members of the community.
The ethos of Motion Control revolves around nurturing confidence and self-esteem to dismantle barriers, allowing members to acquire new skills and broaden their horizons. Offering a diverse range of inclusive classes, they actively encourage disabled children and young people to participate in their broader dance initiatives.
Over recent years, Motion Control has been instrumental in supporting the initiatives of the Vale Council Healthy Living Team, striving to promote physical activity among young people through dance at various events and venues, including schools, disability sessions, and after-school clubs.
Their sessions are renowned for their inclusive and enjoyable nature, ensuring engagement from participants of all abilities.
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport, and Wellbeing, Cllr Gwyn John, commended Motion Control's achievement, stating: "Motion Control Dance's commitment to inclusivity sets a commendable example for our community. Their tireless efforts in providing inclusive opportunities for individuals of all abilities, regardless of any challenges they may face, is not only admirable but truly inspiring.
“Their endeavours resonate deeply with the ethos of the council, promoting diversity, equality, and the celebration of individuality.
“We are very proud of their achievements and hope this encourages others to participate in future classes and events."
Most recently, Motion Control collaborated with Vale People First at the Bridge Between Community Centre, facilitating a 6-week dance project for disabled adults. This endeavour not only provided participants with a newfound sense of confidence and motivation but also encouraged them to explore further opportunities, such as the Local Motion Dance classes offered at the Motion Control Dance centre within the YMCA.
Furthermore, Motion Control has been actively involved in conducting sessions at a resource base within a local primary school, extending support to pupils with additional needs in accessing physical activity. Additionally, they have extended their outreach to older residents through the Golden Pass Scheme.
The Golden Pass Scheme provides individuals aged 60 and above residing in the Vale of Glamorgan with access to eight complimentary sessions of community physical activity and sports. Through this initiative, older participants have had the opportunity to participate in Motion Control sessions. These individuals have lauded the adaptability and inclusivity of the sessions, challenging common misconceptions about exercising in older age. The welcoming environment fostered by the groups has facilitated the enhancement of physical and mental well-being for adults with diverse disabilities, health conditions, or impairments, while also addressing the risk of social isolation.
An 86-year-old participant expressed their satisfaction with the experience, affirming: "I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Lara, the teacher, is patient and understanding. I've been attending every week since joining. My balance has improved, and I feel more flexible. Additionally, I've made friends, and we enjoy a coffee and a chat after class."
The Gold award was presented to Motion Control Founding Director Emma Mallam, Disability Dance Coordinator Sam Griffiths, and dancers from inclusive sessions.
The presentation ceremony was attended by Cllr Gwyn John (Vale Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport, and Wellbeing), David Knevett (Operational Manager, Neighbourhood Services, Healthy Living), Angela Stevens (Healthy Living Officer), and Leif Thobroe (Disability Sport Wales Regional Partnership Senior Officer - Central South Wales).
